Here I would have put in an extra comment to say that -9 was in fact the logical negation of 8, but no matter. Joern Jensen who wrote this code was like the Shakespeare of coding, he had a very large vocabulary, and he could use different idioms for the same concepts, depending on the situation. Note that the Algol comments remained straightforward in each one of the three cases.
